Chapter Nine
Max took a few deep breaths. There wasn’t a paper bag in sight so hyperventilating was not an option. He decided that focusing on his surroundings rather than his heated ass might be a wise idea. The room he was in was huge. His whole apartment could probably fit inside it with a bit of space left over. As he gazed around at the expensive, understated furnishings he began to realize just how wealthy Blake was. Of course he was aware that Blake owned Armacom, but Watersmeet was the home of someone who had reached the upper echelons of society.
“He’s absolutely loaded. What the hell am I doing here?” Left alone in the lounge, panic built inside him. Blake’s presence was an anchor for his sanity and without him Max drifted, lost on a wave of emotion that threatened to overwhelm him. He stared at a painting on the opposite wall. It wasn’t huge, but it seemed vaguely familiar. Max wasn’t an art connoisseur but he knew enough to recognize a Monet. “Holy fuck.” The jewel-like colors blurred and his stomach lurched.
Max spotted his discarded clothes on a chair. Leaving his cushion wasn’t advisable but he did it anyway. He grabbed his jeans, pulling them on as quickly as he could. When the fabric brushed his ass he gasped, then moaned. “I’m losing my mind.” Lusting after Blake from afar was one thing, but the man had just put him in handcuffs and spanked him. Even worse, Max had loved every minute of it. He’d had the best orgasm in living memory and really, really wanted more of those. He couldn’t find his shoes or socks. Then he remembered, he’d left them in the bedroom. Blake’s bedroom! Oh God—that huge, gorgeous bed—comfortable and soft and… Oh, how he’d dreamed of sharing it with Blake. He couldn’t focus—his mind was skittering around all over the place. Shoes… Irrelevant, he’d come in Blake’s car, hadn’t he? There was no way to get home.
Still shirtless, he was pacing up and down when Blake came back. Max had no idea how long Blake had been observing him from the doorway. He froze, not knowing what to say or do. Then Blake walked toward him and enveloped him in a hug. He shuddered in Blake’s hold, repressing a sob but feeling safe and protected. He tried to pull away. “I can’t do this, Blake… I just… This was a mistake.” He struggled harder but Blake just held him tighter.
“Would you like to tell me what happened to frighten you between me leaving the room and now?”
The rumble of Blake’s deep voice vibrated through Max’s body.
“If you don’t tell me what’s going through that brain of yours, Max, I can’t help.”
Max shook his head and let himself go limp. “I want to go home. Can I call a taxi?”
Blake stroked his hair. “If you really want to leave, I’ll drive you home myself.” He moved his hold to Max’s shoulders then cupped his face. “I
